Walk of Shame

The night was damp and thick with clouded air,

I could not see the road beneath my feet—

The feeling of her fingers in my hair

Still haunted me as I swayed down the street.

With rum and filthy kisses on my lips

I stumbled homeward with of regret and dread…

“I broke my vows all for a stranger’s hips,”

I whispered to the darkness up ahead.

Two lights cut through the fog like glowing eyes

That burned with hunger for my guilt and shame,

Just like a monster preying on my lies

It’s engine roared with joy in taking aim.

I begged the screeching tires “come set me free—

Be quick, my shame-starved demon, swallow me.”
