The Unfortunate Miscarriage

Naieisha Young

You were inside me but only for a while,

Only in my dreams do I embrace your smile.

A thousand words won’t bring you back;

I know because I’ve tried.

Neither will a thousand tears;

I know because I’ve cried.

I sit here mystified and numb with pain,

To lose someone so close, yet so far away.

Some say you can’t lose what you never had,

If that’s true, how can I feel this sad?

I wake each morning to start a new day

But the pain of losing you never goes away.

Death is always with us,

Lingering, discreetly in the background.

So quietly he took her, and never made a sound.
